MONDAY 10th - Friday 16th May - Royal Deeside Golf Week 2008 |
 |
Once again Ballaterb Golf Club is holding the Royal Deeside Golf Week from 10 - 16 May. This has been an annual event at the club since 1974 and attracts over 100 golfers to the club for a week of golfing competition and evening entertainment. Golfers from all over the UK attend, from Shetland in the north to London in the south. This year there are a couple attending from Greece. A mixture of competitions are organised each day, apart from Wednesday, which is a “free” day with the option of playing golf at Balmoral Golf Club open to participants on that day. Evening entertainment is provided each day with this year’s highlight being the appearance of The Alexander Brothers on the Tuesday evening - this being their 50th year “on the road”. The week culminates in the prize-giving dance on the Friday evening when the crystal glassware prizes are presented to the winners. The cost for the week is £150.00 and entry forms can be downloaded from the Club’s website www.ballatergolfclub.co.uk. Further information can be obtained by contacting the secretary, Colin Smith on (013397) 55567. |

Open from 10am – 5pm, Admission £1.00 |

Ballater is once again hosting an Antiquarian Book Fair as part of The Victoria Week festivities. Some twenty or so book dealers from across Scotland, and even some from England, will have a wide range of out of print, second hand and antiquarian books for sale. The fair is arranged by The Provincial Booksellers Fairs Association (PBFA) which is a co-operative that organises book fairs throughout the UK.
There will be a variety of items on offer ranging from pamphlets right through to scarce local historical and topographical books. Although many of the dealers from Scotland will obviously specialise in Scottish material, there is always a great mixture of subject matter available. Typical classifications will include Military, Sporting (particularly fishing and shooting), Art and Architecture, Natural History, Topography and Travel, History and Politics, Modern First Editions and Children's Books as well as a good selection of antiquarian maps and prints for sale.
There will once again be a professional bookbinder at the fair. Mark Ramsden, head bookbinder at the Queen Mother Library at Aberdeen University, will be able to offer advice on book repairs and restoration and to make a quote for any work needed. Mark will have examples of his work available and will also have a practical exhibition of the various stages of bookbinding on view.
Further details can be obtained from Bryn Wayte, Deeside Books, Bridge Street, Ballater. Tel: 01339 754080, Email deesidebk@aol.com. Alternatively, you can visit the PBFA website at www.pbfa.org and go to Fairs, Regional, Scotland, and all the Scottish Fairs are listed there. |
